Creationism and School Vouchers

Monday October 17, 2005
Florida's voucher program is pouring millions of dollars into the teaching of creationism. Some might be aghast at the idea state-sponsored pseudo-science, but that's always been one of the goals of voucher proponents: get the state to fund religious beliefs that it can't otherwise promote in public schools.

The Miami Herald reports:

About 25 percent of schools that take vouchers are nonreligious, and others are religious schools that apply the state's science standards, including instruction in evolutionary biology. But many -- perhaps even most -- of the 1,100 participating schools are of evangelical Christian denominations that teach the biblical story of creation in six days as literal truth.

Specific numbers aren't available because the state doesn't keep track of the curricula used in these school. Yes, amazing as that seems, it looks like these voucher schools could be teaching that the earth is flat, that astrology is true, and that the Holocaust didn't happen — and not only wouldn't the state know, it wouldn't much care. The state is funding the development of a generation of children who don't comprehend science because of the religious ignorance of their parents.

  1. Yes, even if the money goes to religious schools
