Druid Couple Reaches Agreement Over Illegal Stop

Friday September 30, 2005
Remember the South Carolina police officer who tried the proselytize the Druid couple he stopped for a traffic citation? The city has agreed to apologize, but they insist that nothing wrong was done.

FOX Carolina reports:

Although the Greer Police Department cleared reserve officer Tony Stewart of any wrongdoing it agreed to settle with the Gaineys’. The Gaineys’ most serious and expensive charge for operating uninsured was dismissed all together.

Other tickets for driving while suspended and improper tags were reduced to the minimum fines. Tony Gainey: “All we wanted was an apology and acknowledgement from the city and to know this will not go on. Hopefully this wont happen in the city of Greer or another community again”.

The State reports:

City officials have written letters of apology and has shut down its reserve officer program.

Stewart was riding along with a certified officer, who actually conducted the stop and wrote the citations. Stewart was cleared of doing anything wrong after an investigation, but he can no longer participate in any reserve program if the city restarts one.

Amazingly, Greer attorney John Duggan insists that “There was no religious haranguing nor was there any inappropriate religious action.” Unless he thinks that the couple is lying, that has to be a false statement — but if he really has good reason to think that the couple was lying, then why apologize and eliminate the reserve officer program? The city’s actions can’t be explained by mere caution alone.
