Dennis Prager Simplifies the World into Nonsense

Monday August 29, 2005
Quite often when someone is making an argument that cannot stand on its own merits, they engage in a logical fallacy known as the "false dilemma." In this, they reduce the number of allegedly available options to an artificial number (usually 2) and demand that we pick. This way, they don't to explain why their preferred option is best.

Dennis Prager writes in TownHall:

At this moment, there are three ideologies competing for humanity's acceptance: secular and leftist, Judeo-Christian and Islam.

These are the only alternatives? He’s left out Hinduism, Buddhism, and Taoism, all of which account for a significant percentage of humanity at the moment. Prager at least mentions Buddhism briefly, but only to claim that it isn’t of any use on the level of society. It sounds to me like the studies he claims to have done were completely wasted.

Then there is the fact that “secular and leftist” encompasses so much for Prager: secularism, liberalism, socialism, humanism, environmentalism, and so forth. He doesn’t seem to recognize that they are all different — they might occur together in some people, but not necessarily. Some socialists, for example, are Jews or Christians. Does he acknowledge this? No. Does he even know it? Good question — it’s hard to tell with Prager when he is simply being ignorant and when he’s deliberately distorting the facts.
