Atheism in Taiwan

Wednesday July 6, 2005
Evidently Taiwan is a good place for atheists - the people there are highly tolerant of religious beliefs in general and a significant percentage are atheists themselves. Evangelists, however, have a tougher time. Their religion may be respected, but their attempts to convert people are not thought of very highly.

Michael Turton writes:

[I]n Taiwan, people of all religions live together peaceably, and atheism is widely accepted. I always tell my atheist friends in the US, where atheist males outnumber atheist females something like 2-1, that East Asia is an enormous pool of atheist females -- and tolerant ones where not atheist -- that they should take advantage of.

Of course, there is one difficult barrier to feeling comfortable in Taiwan: having to learn the Chinese language. I’ve studied several languages and, while I haven’t actually studied Chinese, I think it would be very difficult. Still, it’s nice to know that there are some nations out there where atheism is treated as normal and acceptable.
