Blogsnark: Atheism Nonsense

Wednesday May 11, 2005
Is atheism nonsensical? Some theists think so, but when they try to explain how and why they typically use really awful misunderstandings or myths about atheism. It's clear that they haven't made any effort to learn about or understand atheism - so it's no wonder that they don't see any sense in it.

Koconegoro writes:

What I am trying to say is that to a certain degree everybody must have a belief, regardless whether they want to admit it or not, in God, in divinity or something beyond their own control. They have to.

I'm sure that Koco thinks his theism is so central to his life that he can't imagine not having some sort of theistic belief, but why does that justify insisting that everyone must therefore have such a belief? In the sentences just prior to this Koco started out insisting that people are atheists in order to justify hedonism, then immediately backed away from that — so he showed a little bit of sense, but then immediately abandoned it.

What a pity.

What a lonely and stressful life it must be for a real atheist. If there is one. He has to be realllly happy all the time, never stumbles on astrocities or any stumbling blocks in his life. He should also be very resourceful and should have lots of friends who are willing to help him in time of needs. Why? Because there should be times, there must be times when each and every one of us will feel that the situation that we are facing ( whatever it is) is so helpless.

I've met lonely theists and I'm sure there are lonely atheists — but I've never known atheists to be more lonely than theists. You don't need to be happy all the time, either, because you don't need any gods to call on in times of stress. Perhaps Koco does — and perhaps Koco's life really sucks — but atheists as a group don't have this problem. This is just a mild variation on the old "There are no atheists in foxholes" myth. This myth is popular — perhaps because it makes theists feel better about themselves — but it's false, no matter what form it's presented in.
