Catholic Funeral Denied to Gay Bar Owner

Sunday March 20, 2005
If you are a bar owner, should the Catholic church refuse to bury you? What if you are a gay bar owner? Well, that's what happened in San Diego where a very popular gay bar owner was denied burial by the Catholic church because his "lifestyle" was incompatible with Catholic "values."

The San Diego Union-Tribune explains:

Earlier this week, citing McCusker's "business activities," San Diego Bishop Robert Brom announced that McCusker couldn't receive a Catholic funeral at any parish in the diocese's jurisdiction, which encompasses 98 parishes in San Diego and Imperial counties. ... In its latest statement on the controversy, the diocese sought yesterday to explain the reasoning behind the decision. "The bishop acted as he did so that the faithful would not be misled and erroneously conclude that the Church condones activities such as those included in the businesses of Mr. McCusker," the statement said.

Evidently, McCusker rented out his bar to private groups and, sometimes, those groups made porn films there. McCusker didn't participate or anything, he just rented his bar. The fact that he himself was gay isn't relevant... or so they say. I wonder if any of those involved in the sexual abuse crisis have been or will be given Catholic funerals?
