Discussion: Poetry & Music for Atheists

There are certain poems and songs that have always inspired welcome emotions in me, but which I can no longer fully appreciate, due to their God references. One poem which I have loved ever since I first encountered it, is Robert Browning's Pippa Passes. The mood it inspires in me is sheer joy in being alive...but, when I became an atheist, I could no longer relate to the following lines... "God's in his Heaven, / All's right with the world." Adoring this poem as I did, I was one day inspired to alter "God's in his Heaven" to "the earth's in its orbit." In this modified form, I can now appreciate the poem, with no reservations. (I realize Robert Browning wouldn't approve...but who cares?...he's dead!)
A great deal of poetry and music is religious in nature or at least deals with religious themes. This can cause difficulties for irreligious atheists. Rewriting the material is an interesting solution to the problem — have you ever tried it? Read More...
