Ten Commandments Road Show

Monday August 2, 2004
Roy Moore's Ten Commandments monument has hit the road to visit loyal far-right religious believers all over the South. First stop: Dayton, Tennessee, the site of the infamous Scopes Monkey Trial.

WCCO reports:

"The ACLU is still the enemy," said June Griffin of Dayton, an outspoken advocate for displays of the Ten Commandments in government buildings. ... Jewell Sneed, 70, snapped photos of her 7-year-old great grandson, Jacob, standing beside the monument. "I think it was awful for them to make them move it from he courthouse," Sneed said. "That is what our country is based on, is God and the Bible. Why we want to take God out I don't know. I think we are headed for big trouble when we take God out of schools and everything."

Larry Darby, president of the Mongtomery-based Atheist Law Center, Inc., was there — with the predictable show of Christian love following:

Larry Darby ... was heckled by some in the crowd Saturday and loudly told, "You're not welcome here." ... "I'm glad I didn't carry my gun. I'd probably be in jail right now." [John Rocco, 73, of Dayton] said. "I believe in the Ten Commandments and I don't appreciate what people like him are doing to my country."

Clearly, our country would be much better off with fewer ACLU members and more people like John Rocco around. Right? People like Rocco are far more moral and upright than any godless ACLU heathen. Right? I’m not sure how, though, Rocco manages to reconcile believing in the Ten Commandments and feeling compelled to murder atheists. Maybe there is a little-known exception to the commandment against murder — thou shalt not murder, unless you see a vile, godless atheist in your midst?

Gotta appreciate that Christian love emanating from the South.
