Couple Evicted Over Witchcraft?
An Ohio couple evicted from their apartment are alleging that the eviction was entirely due to the fact that they practice witchcraft, something the owner of the property objected to. The high plausibility of this story is just another sign of how little religious tolerance there sometimes is in America.
The Coshocton Tribune reports:
According to Jessica Bradford, the notice was served June 19, on the Orange Street home, and she later spoke with James Skelton, A&B Rentals LLC's attorney. Bradford said Skelton claimed that if she really wanted a reason for the eviction notice, it was because of the practice of witchcraft.
Skelton said Thursday that the conversation went differently; after informing Bradford that the month-to-month lease was being terminated, he said, Bradford asked if witchcraft was a reason for the eviction. "I said that I've heard those reports, and we're certainly not happy," Skelton said. He said there were complaints from neighbors about classes in witchcraft taking place at the home. ... And, he said, witchcraft is not, to his knowledge, a constitutionally protected religion.
An attorney is claiming that there are religions which are not constitutionally protected? Where did he get his law degree, by mail order? It’s true that certain religious practices don’t get constitutional protection (human sacrifice, for example), but there is no “hierarchy” of religions, with some receiving constitutional protection and some not.
The owners of the property might legitimately take into consideration if the renters are creating a disturbance with lots of large gatherings, but that can only be because of the problems created by large gatherings. It can’t matter if the gathers are for the sake of Christianity, for witchcraft, or for something completely secular.
