A lot of very smart, educated, and experienced people have been working very hard to figure out where business and/or government went wrong to cause the current economic crisis. Then there are people like Daniel Henninger who abuse their positions of influence and authority to blame scapegoats who had nothing to do with the current problems but by being smeared with false accusations they can serve to distract from the real issues. Christians have claimed that Christmas, marriage, morality, and more are theirs to define and control. What unites these issues is an effort by conservative Christians to claim ownership over cultural or political institutions which should be open equally to all citizens. Higher rates of belief in and worship of a single creator god correlate very strongly with higher rates of homicides, STDS, both juvenile and adult mortality, teen pregnancy, abortion, and more. This is especially true of the United States which is a prosperous democracy but also highly dysfunctional, making it far more like struggling third-world nations in far too many respects — and how much of that can be laid at the feet of religion?
