This Date in History: Barmen Synod
Sunday May 30, 2004
May 30, 1934: At the end of the two-day Barmen Synod in Germany, the German Confessing Church released the Barmen Declaration. This document insisted that churches recognize Jesus Christ as the only authoritative voice of God - a rebuke to any other powers (like the Nazis) who might claim to represent divine authority.
