Gay Hotel Discriminates Against Straights

Sunday April 25, 2004
Usually when we hear about couples being discriminated against because of their sexual orientation, the situation involves straights discriminating against gays. Now, however, we have a case of a hotel catering to gays that has discriminated against straight couples. Specifically targeting the gay market is one thing, but kicking people out for not being gay is another.

The Modesto Bee reports:

"The manager literally said, 'We don't want you here,'" said Jim Pirih, who had vacationed at Big Ruby's last year with his partner, Jason Williams. [T]he manager told the straight couples they would have to leave, citing a policy of not allowing heterosexuals on the property, Pirih said.
"He said he had to appeal to the majority, and the majority of guests wouldn't want straight people there," Pirih said. The six were allowed to stay one night, but had to check out Thursday morning and were told they wouldn't be compensated for the inconvenience, Pirih said.

This sort of discrimination is against the law in Key West and, so far as I know, every gay group contacted about this has condemned the discrimination. What the manager did was ridiculous - there was no justifiction for it and I hope that the maximum fine is levied against the place. More than that, though, I hope that gay couples stand up for their principles and stop patronizing such a place. You can't support equal rights for your own group while funding a business that practices discrimination against others.
