April 21, 1971: The U.S. Supreme Court ruled on its first abortion case: United States v. Vuitch. The Court upheld a District of Columbia law allowing abortion only to preserve a woman's life or "health," making it clear that by "health" it means "psychological and physical well-being," effectively allowing abortion for any reason.
