Austin Cline's Agnosticism / Atheism BlogLawsuit over Evolution Disclaimers Going ForwardCobb County school administrators were hoping that a federal judge would dismiss a lawsuit against them that challenged their use of anti-evolution disclaimers in science text books. Fortunately, the judge decided that there was enough merit to the case to let it proceed.
The Omaha World-Herald reports: The lawsuit argues that the disclaimer restricts the teaching of evolution, promotes and requires the teaching of creationism and discriminates against particular religions. The sticker reads: "This textbook contains material on evolution. Evolution is a theory, not a fact, regarding the origin of living things. This material should be approached with an open mind, studied carefully and critically considered." According to the ruling this disclaimer might have the effect of advancing or inhibiting religion and that this is something that a court should be able to rule on. The school administrators might still win, there is no question about that, but now at least they will have to argue their case in court.
