Girl Scouts Pressured to Cut Ties with Planned Parenthood
The Waco Tribune-Herald explains:
The move comes after 2 1/2 weeks of controversy sparked by a Baylor University professor's call for a boycott of the group's cookie sales. ... John Pisciotta, the Baylor professor who called for the boycott, said the move is a step in the right direction, but a complete break from Planned Parenthood is needed. "I hope they will do this and this whole thing can end," he said.
Pam Smallwood, executive director of Planned Parenthood of Central Texas, said she was shocked at the decision. "I'm sick to think that an organization as illustrious as the Girl Scouts would make a decision based on one person's political agenda," Smallwood said.
Speaking for myself, I'm not at all surprised by this turn of events - the Christian Right has quite a lot of social leverage in Texas and they probably would have been able to make a boycott work. Religious extremists are, by definition, unable to compromise on any issue and work with others with whom they might disagree on some things; thus, seeing an institution like the Girl Scouts work with Planned Parenthood in any way, shape, or form is anathema to them.
