Gay Republican Leaving GOP

Thursday March 4, 2004
The Republican insistence on using the plight of gays as a cultural cudgel to help them retain power may, in some small ways, only serve to work against them as moderate conservatives decide that "their" party just doesn't exist anymore. That seems to be what John Farina, an Ohio Republican, has concluded.

Gay.com reports:

In a letter to the chair of the Republican Party of Cuyahoga County, John Farina, a former official in the county's party organization and former president of the Cleveland chapter of the Log Cabin Republicans, ended his 20-year association with the GOP. He also withdrew his candidacy for the Board of Elections' central committee in the March 2 primary. ... Farina said he knows of one other gay Republican, who wishes to remain anonymous, who quit the party since Tuesday. GOP desertions have also begun to register on the site of conservative blogger Andrew Sullivan.

Republicans don't seem to realize that the politics of bigotry only sells among bigots - and while there are plenty of anti-gay bigots in America, their numbers are on the decline. History is ultimately against them - and, as a consequence, history is against any political party that tries to achieve power through them.
