Wesley Clark on Religious Symbols in Public Areas

Wednesday January 21, 2004
Although Wesley Clark has tried to make a point of being religious, that hasn't mean that he believes that the government should be involved with promoting religion. Just the contrary is true: according to Clark, it's important for religion and religious believers that church and state remain separate.

Responding to a question about whether federal courts had gone too far in removing religious symbols from public places, Wesley Clark wrote for The Boston Globe:

Religion plays an important role in my life and has an important role to play in our culture. We are a very religious and very diverse nation. We have strong faith, and we rely on that faith to guide our decision making. That is the role that religion should play. I strongly believe, as our founding fathers understood, that in order for a diverse people with strongly held individual beliefs to form a strong democracy government must be separate from religion -- both to protect religious faith and diversity of faith. I don’t think that federal courts that have upheld this separation, a matter of settled constitutional law, have gone too far.

If Clark were president, I don't think that anyone would have to be concerned about him abusing his power or his office in order to promote a particular religion or any particular religious beliefs.
