Wesley Clark on Church/State Separation

Friday January 2, 2004
For most atheists, an important issue when it comes to the presidential election is the candidates' position on the separation of church and state. It's not the only issue, that is true, but it is a very important issue. We've heard about where Howard Dean stands, same with Joe Lieberman. But what about Wesley Clark?

The Charleston Post and Courier reports:

Clark also was asked if his belief in the separation of church and state includes the removal of "In God We Trust" from U.S. currency and the reference to God in the Pledge of Allegiance. "I'm comfortable with God in our currency and in the Pledge," he said, adding "it's up to the courts."

It's nice to see that even where Clark is willing to allow some violations of church/state separation to continue, he is also willing to let the court stop those violations. This is a sharp contrast to so many Republicans - and even a number of Democrats - who want to pass new laws and new constitutional amendments as soon as a court case goes against what they want.
