Lomandra writes: In a world first, the highest appellate court in Australia, the High Court, has reinforced sexual orientation as grounds for refugee status. The lower courts had ruled that if the gay couple from Bangladesh were discreet, then they would not be persecuted and thus were not entitled to asylum. The High Court, however, has ruled that the claim should be determined according to whether they can safely live openly as homosexuals in their home country.
