City Refuses to Move Ten Commandments Monument

Saturday November 15, 2003
The city of Everett, Washington has a Ten Commandments monument from in front of City Council chambers and they are being sued to have it removed. Jesse Card offered to drop the suit if the monument were moved just one block away, to sit in front of a church, but the Council has rejected this offer and vows to fight.

The Herald reports:

"We continue to believe we have the right to maintain the monument in front of the old City Hall," city attorney Mark Soine said. He said the 44-year-old monument is a historic landmark that promotes universal values and legal principles, not a particular religion.

The offer is completely reasonable. The monument would be seen by about as many people but there wouldn't be any question about a possible violation of the separation of church and state. What better location could there be for a Christian formulation of the Ten Commandments than in front of a Christian church? It certainly isn't something that the government has any authority to endorse.
