Boulder Schools Reverse on Pledge

Friday August 29, 2003
Schools in the Boulder Valley School District will no longer be required to force students to recite the Pledge of Allegiance - although they may choose to do so if they wish. This reversed an earlier decision taken under the assumption that a federal judge's order blocking the enforcement of a state-wide requirement to force students to recite the Pledge of Allegiance only applied to other schools.

According to the Star Tribune:

''My reaction is that it's a good thing,'' Barry Satlow, chairman of Boulder's ACLU chapter, told The Daily Camera. ''They shouldn't have Big Brother in Boulder.'' ... The Boulder Valley district and the ACLU are both bracing for whatever new version of the statute lawmakers may approve.

Schools would be better off trying to teach students why they should want to pledge allegiance rather than simply forcing them to do so. Or would that make too much sense?
