When the Episcopal Church elected an openly gay man to the office of bishop, it didn't just cause deep strains within the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion. It has also resulted in growing difficulties between Anglicans and the Roman Catholic Church.

According to The Beacon Journal:

A dialogue between the two denominations - already strained by the Church of England's 1992 decision to ordain women - will likely be stalled, if not set back, over the divisive issue of homosexuality, participants from both churches told The Associated Press. ... John Wilkins, editor of The Tablet, the London-based Catholic weekly, says efforts to improve Anglican-Catholic relations may have been dealt a possibly fatal blow. "There comes a point when you can't go on any more," Wilkins said in a telephone interview. "The two churches are going in opposite directions."

Wilkins is almost certainly correct that the two denominations are moving in opposite directions - Anglicans are moving forward while Catholics are moving backwards. That's been happening for a long time, as demonstrated by the fact that the Roman Catholic Church already considers the relations strained to the breaking point over the ordination of female priests.
