Mailbag: Praying For You

Friday November 10, 2006
From: "Ken"
Subject: atheism
Isn't it terrible that someone, Jesus, actually hung on a cross and died for you? How terrible.
My family and I will be praying daily for you.

Whether those statements about Jesus are true or not is really Begging the Question.

More interesting, though, is the question of why was it necessary to announce that there would be prayers? Isn't it sufficient to simply pray - aren't prayers a matter between a person and their god(s), not third parties? Surely an advance notice of prayers won't make them more effective. Does the announcement serve to make the theist feel better? Does it serve to communicate that the believer has a "line" to God which the atheist lacks?

In such a situation as this, it may be conveying a sincere concern for the atheist in the form of hoping that the atheist will start believing, but it also conveys a message of arrogant superiority. It says "I'm right and you're wrong - so wrong, in fact, that now I am going to have to seek divine intervention in the effort to set you right. You were unable to understand my arguments, so all that is left is for God to do something."

(1) Evangelist Smith says:

So you had rather believe satan and his lies than the Holy Word of A Righteous and Holy God?

Friend ,we serve a Merciful God and Saviour, or we none would be here..God in His mercy has extended to you this day because He is longsuffering wishing that no one perish…….But it is man’s decision to choose to do good or evil, to repent or perish, to serve God or satan…….MANS CHOICE MY FRIEND, MANS…I pray you make the right decision before ur name is called and you leave this world and step out into eternity…I pray you do…In His Service, Evangelist D.Smith

And in what way is your God’s word “Righteous and Holy”?

I don’t serve any God, or saviour. I believe no such being(s) exist. I am here without God. I choose to do “good” and not “evil” without God. I neither serve a god or Satan. Don’t bother praying…

I know this was probably aimed at Austin, but I thought i’d save him the hassle of replying.

Hey, Friend Evangelist D. Smith.

Atheists don’t believe Satan and his lies. We’ve never even met the guy. Really. We’re “atheists” you see. We probably don’t even believe in Satan. I’m sure I don’t.

Yes, I know it’s shocking. Here, maybe you’d better sit down. Quite a jolt to the system, eh Friend? I realize that doesn’t make you feel quite as good as that little sermon did back in March, but I don’t want you to fall and hurt yourself. Comfy? There ya go.

Seriously, Friend. What gives? Trust me, if I knew Satan personally you’d hear about it. All that time complaining about how God done him wrong, his hopeless plans for universal domination…the guy would probably drive me nuts. And I’d complain about it.

I’m sure he drinks a lot early in the morning. Very early. Ya know? He was probably drinking tequila when he wrote the screenplay for the Dukes of Hazard movie or manufactured evidence that being gay is a biological imperative rather than a choice for Satan-loving naughtiness. Heh heh, what a clown.

But you can choose to be a real boy instead of stereotype, Friend Evangelist D. Smith. Now that you’ve gotten that little sermon off your chest and waved your finger under our noses, Friend, you’ve got choices. Thanks for letting us know that you’re praying for Austin. I’m sure he’s already a die hard Christian thanks to Jesus’ magic. If Jesus heeds your prayers, that is. IF HE HEEDS THEM, FRIEND. IF.

Friend.

In service to humanity, Atheist Isaac J.

PS…I’ll pray for you, too.

Evangilist Smith:
Atheists to not believe in god or his adversary, the devil. There is nothing “good” about the god of the bible. The god of the bible throws hissy fits and destroys innocent people, including children and babies, for the most minor infractions. How can this be called good?
