Hospital Bans Atkins Diet

Saturday August 23, 2003
The Atkins diet has been hugely popular in recent years and many people swear that it is effective. Some scientific studies suggest that it may be helpful in losing weight but others are much less positive. Medical professional are not entirely happy with it - and in one British hospital, no patients will be served any meals that are designed around the Atkins Diet.

According to IC Coventry:

A spokesman said: "It is not appropriate when you are in a hospital to go on that diet. "You need high energy and carbohydrates and the Atkins diet eliminates carbohydrates. We are having to say it is not medically appropriate. ... The Government-funded Medical Research Council has condemned the diet as "pseudo science" and said it could lead to kidney damage in some people.

This probably won't cause anyone to stop using it or even to give it a second thought - but it probably should.
