Religion is Falling Behind Reality

Many traditional religions purport to offer believers absolute certainty about the world, the universe, and their place in it. Unfortunately, that often involves also instilling a sense in people that they are somehow superior to others.

Michael Henderson wrote for the Border Mail:

Unfortunately, this process leads to a retreat into authoritarianism, fundamentalism, and absolutism that is, black and white, us and them, lines drawn in the sand. ...The problem is that reality is not like this. We live in a world of diversity and individual differences. In any one small community in any country the variety and diversity of individuals shows a greater difference in physical shape and personality than the differences between the main distinct cultural forms.

Accepting such a world requires tolerance for diverse opinions; authoritarian religions, however, cannot have such tolerance. If they are certain that they have The Answer, they cannot be expected to show a great deal of tolerance towards error, can they?
