Evolution: Students Should See Different Views

Monday July 21, 2003
According to Minnesota's education commissioner, students who are learning biology should be "exposed to differing views on the subject" when it comes to the topic of evolution. This, apparently, is a way to try and avoid having to choose between teaching evolution and teaching creationism.

According to the Duluth News Tribune:

Education Commissioner Cheri Pierson Yecke will ask the committee to consider an amendment that Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., tried unsuccessfully to add to the federal No Child Left Behind law. It says that when controversial topics -- such as biological evolution -- come up in the classroom, the curriculum should help students understand other views as well.

So, when history classes teach about Nazi Germany, will they also be "exposed to differing views" about the value of Nazism and how many Jews were actually killed? When social studies classes teach about democracy, will students be "exposed to differing views" about the value of fascism and whether women and minorities should be allowed to vote? If the cause of "balanced treatment" is valid, then why only apply it to evolution?
