Christianity's Fixation on Sex
Is Christianity too fixated on sex, sex acts, and human sexuality? Sometimes it certainly seems that way - and Martin Hogg, a member of the Scottish Episcopal Church and a director of the Lesbian and Gay Christian Movement, is very critical of it. According to Hogg, this obsession threatens to overwhelm other things that the churches do and much more important issues that Christians should be concerning themselves with.
Hogg also argues that efforts to repress people's sexual feelings is, in essence, an effort to repress something that is a gift from God:
What kind of god gives human beings an overwhelming desire to share their lives in a loving way, including a physical, sexual way, but then says you cannot do it? Such a god would be a tyrant and not worthy of our love and obedience. But it is such a view of God, foisted on many Christians and churchgoers, that has driven so many gay and lesbian people out of the church.
It is an open question, however, whether Christianity will readily progress to the point where sexuality is no longer an obsession. It certainly doesn't seem likely, at least not any time soon.
