Unitarian Universalists and God

Wednesday July 2, 2003
For a long time the Unitarian Universalist Association has had more in common with humanism - even secular humanism - than it has with traditional Christianity and traditional theistic religious groups. This, despite the fact that the general structure of the organization and format of its meetings (in a church) have preserved many of the formal trappings of Christianity.

Today, however, that may be changing. The president, an atheist who has adopted theism, is pushing the group to also adopt an explicit reverence for "God," something which seems to be garnering support among many younger members even as older members vehemently disagree with such changes.

Nothing has been finalized yet; this is still very much in the debating stage. Nevertheless, it should be interesting to see what happens. The Unitarian Universalist Association is growing, unlike many mainstream and liberal Protestant denominations. Even those who acknowledge that they are theists quickly distance themselves from the traditional sorts of theism one might find in Christianity.
