Evangelical Christians Support Israel, Not Peace

Wednesday July 2, 2003
About a quarter of all voters in America describe themselves as evangelical Christians - and their leaders are becoming increasingly vocal in their opposition to the "road map" to peace created by President Bush. This peace plan is designed to help Palestinians create an independent state, but that would be made out of land that both evangelical Christians and conservative Jews believe was promised by God to the Jews.

Both, therefore, object to any such state - but of course without that state, there will be no peace. If Bush persists in his efforts to create a Palestinian state, evangelical Christian voters may cause problems for his efforts to get re-elected in 2004. Which will Bush favor: re-election in America or peace in the Middle East? And why are evangelical Christians using religion as a basis for siding with Israeli extremists against the Palestinians?
