Public Research in the Public Domain

There is a lot of important scientific and medical research out there that has largely or wholly funded by the public, but which the public cannot access due to the closed system of scientific publication. The Public Library of Science hopes to change all of that by creating a new system of publishing in which "publications describing research substantially funded by taxpayer dollars" are automatically put in the public domain.
