Catholicism and Healthcare: Abortion in Catholic Hospitals

Does your community hospital provide services like abortion, birth control counseling, or even emergency contraception after rape? How about voluntary sterilization or infertility treatments? Probably not, if the hospital is Catholic. But what you might not realize is that even if your community hospital is nonsectarian, it still won't provide those services if it is in any way affiliated or has merged with any Catholic organization. What exactly does this mean for you and your family?

I had an issue with a Catholic hospital about 18 years ago. The Catholic hospital was considered the best in the city I lived in. The other hospital was for the indigent and I had heard horror stories about it. I wanted to get my tubes tied and since it was contraception the Catholic hospital would not do it. so I went to the other hospital. All went well and it was a great hospital after all. You just cannot believe rumors about all hospitals. It got a bad rep because they took on the poor and all the rich people went to the Catholic one.

Just a comment : I decided to click on the Mormon advertisement and I am chatting with someone. I thought it would be interesting as I am now an atheist. !

Catholic bishops have control over more than the medical decisions about contraception and abortion at Catholic hospitals. The bishops also control decisions over the removal of feeding tubes from brain dead and terminally ill patients. At a Catholic hospital the medical decisions are not just something between patient and doctor.

I read an interesting article on the internet today. I can’t remember if it happened in 2006 or if that was when the case was decided which is in appeal right now. At a Catholic hospital in Colorado, a husband and his 7 month old pregant wife carrying twins died in the emergency area of the hospital. The lawyers for the Catholic hospital won the wrongful death lawsuit by saying that since the twins were in utero they were fetuses and NOT people. I wonder why that hasn’t been plastered all over the news over the years.
