Excusing Anti-Atheist Bigotry: Atheists are Totalitarian for Opposing Majority Votes

By , About.com GuideMarch 19, 2011

Follow me on:

Atheists are not just closely associated with church/state cases generally, but specifically with those which deny the government authority in religious matters. Because government efforts to assume such authority are frequently driven by popular demand, especially in local matters, atheists are thus associated with opposing democratically expressed wishes of the voters. This does not make atheists totalitarian, though, because it's not totalitarian to restrict the scope of government power.

I am frequently shocked by how ignorant Americans are about this. “If the majority wants it the majority is always right so they should get it!!!” Sounds like brats on a playground. The notion is sheer bullying, and nothing more. Unfortunately we have reached a point where many are not educated enough to recognize that the state must remain neutral and secular, and that imposing a majority’s will on a minority is tyranny, not democracy. Usually it is those who perceive themselves to be members of this privileged majority, who sing its praises and demand its bullying will be enforced.

Well son, all I can say is someday when when God finally sweeps the hearts of men with the regenerating work of the Spirit that will be the day I slit your throught. Just keep smiling that stupid smug smile as you poison our country. Your day will come ,sooner than you think. In fact I may not wait that long. Keep smiling.

Whites used their majority status to pass Jim Crow laws and segregation laws until the courts overturned them starting with Brown and later with Loving. You can’t squelch the rights of minorities simply by using the majority.

Right on Deegee, unfortunately in our current supposedly liberal democracy, there are those elements actively working to undermine these ideals and return us to the good ol’ boy glory days of the early 20th century (or the 19th) when red-blooded American rich male WASPs made up all the rules and the rest of us submitted meekly to their “god-granted” (giggle) authority. Wow shotgun, a threat to slit throughts (your spelling), how very…islamofascist of you! ;-)

And the more advanced thinkers are really no better than Robertson in their reasoning! Such as haughty John Haught and Alister McGrath make such nonsense. Google skeptic griggsy to see how I skewer theism.
