What do bigoted, homophobic Christians really think about the problem of suicide among gay teens who suffer under bullying? Well, since that bullying often comes from Christians, it would be difficult for them to pretend that they think it really is a problem. Only a few are honest about this -- for example Clint McCance, a school board member in Midland Arkansas.
McCance recently responded on Facebook to a call to wear purple in support of bullied LGBT youth by essentially reinforcing the bullying. With people like Clint McCance on the school board, it's difficult to believe that the school itself could ever be a safe place for gay kids -- much less gay teachers or staff. Maybe the fact that he resigned will mean that there is hope for the school, though.
McCance wrote the following message on his Facebook page: "Seriously they want me to wear purple because five queers killed themselves. The only way im wearin it for them is if they all commit suicide. I cant believe the people of this world have gotten this stupid. We are honoring the fact that they sinned and killed thereselves because of their sin. REALLY PEOPLE."
Initially, six people "liked" McCance's message. He also received supportive comments, though some challenged his statement. A commenter wrote, "Because hatred is always right." That led McCance to write, "No because being a fag doesn't give you the right to ruin the rest of our lives. If you get easily offended by being called a fag then dont tell anyone you are a fag. Keep that shit to yourself. I dont care how people decide to live their lives. They dont bother me if they keep it to thereselves. It pisses me off though that we make a special purple fag day for them. I like that fags cant procreate. I also enjoy the fact that they often give each other aids and die. If you arent against it, you might as well be for it."

Being a bigoted, hateful, homophobic Christian doesn't give you the right to ruin others' lives by expressing support for others' suicides. If you get easily offended by others' sexuality then avert your eyes when you see other human beings and don't tell others that your a bigoted Christian. Keep that hate to yourself. I don't care how people decide to live their lives -- they don't bother me if they keep their petty, juvenile hate to themselves. It pisses me off, though, when we make special legal exceptions and accommodations for them.
And as if all the above weren't bad enough, Clint McCance made it clear that he wouldn't spare his hatred from his own family if he found "the gay" in his home:
"I would disown my kids they were gay. They will not be welcome at my home or in my vicinity. I will absolutely run them off. Of course my kids will know better. My kids will have solid christian beliefs. See it infects everyone."
That is not a safe house for any child -- no home is safe when the parents would behave so abusively whenever discovering that their children aren't living up to certain religious dogmas. If Clint McCance does currently have children or ever has children in the future, I hope local authorities keep a close eye on the kids to make sure they are protected from him.
A problem as large, if not larger, than McCance’s idiocy was the silence by the schoolboard. Instead of acting to remove or silence him, they circled the wagons and put up feeble disclaimers along the lines of “McCance’s words do not reflect others’ opinions”.
When it comes to hate speech, silence equals assent. The silence of the school board tells me that they agree with him but they know that they can’t say it. If they actually believed he was wrong, they would have removed him immediately instead of waiting for him to resign.

It should be pointed out in the school boards defense that mr McCance was elected to the school board and as such could not be removed by the school board, just as any city council cannot fire a mayor. All they can do is ask for his resignation, however he refuse.
it should also be pointed out that the board did ask for his resignation and he has since resigned.
As for Petes fallacious screed, show proof that it was the acceptance of homosexuals that caused the downfall and you might have a point, but alas, you cannot. Also i think you will find that nazi germany was far from accepting homosexuality in the manner in which you suggest.
McCance’s basic problem is that he, like many theists, believe that being gay is a lifestyle choice and not an inborn trait. Does he think someone wakes up in the morning and asks himself or herself, “Hmmm, should I be straight or should I be gay? The former is universally accepted by society and treated equally by government, while the latter is scorned by both. Yeah, I will CHOOSE to be gay.”
Substitute “left-handed” for “gay” in McCance’s ugly remarks about his kids and he then sounds really, really stupid. “I would disown my kids if they were left-handed….”

Also, a comment on Ancient Greece, and Rome – both have taught us many things about democracy and civilization, both good and bad. Some of the good has been forgotten over the years. Have we had 2000 years of progress? Not really. Treatment of homosexuality differs over the years but considering the length of time both greek and roman civilizations lasted for, your comment “…and then totally collapsed” is laughable.
