Phoenician Ritual Sacrifices

Ritual sacrifices, often connected to festivals surrounding a dying and resurrecting god, were important in Phoenician religion. Sacrifices of vegetable and animals were most common, but human sacrifices occurred in times of difficulty. Sacrifice and consumption of pigs, however, was taboo. The preferred human sacrifice was an innocent child who, as a vicarious victim, represented the most extreme act of propitiation possible and was probably intended to guaranteed the future of the entire community.

Human sacrifice was a custom in many cultures in the past, but it was clearly condemned in the Old Testament. Wherever Christianity’s influence has spread such practices have ceased. Does atheism have such a reputation? What does it have to say to present day human sacrifice, such as abortion?

@ “Free thinker”: Isn’t the main tenet of Christianity based on human sacrifice? And the OT may not approve of human sacrifice, but it certainly has no problem with killing human beings.

And atheism is not a belief system; it neither prescribes nor proscribes any behavior.

All you have to do is look in a particular dumpster of an abortion clenic and see the human sacrifices that were made for the interest of their mothers. Jesus’ sacrifice was with his consent, wasn’t it?

Free Thinker, have you read about the
girl being burnt as an offering in Judges?
Reflect for a moment about the morality of
a man willing to sacrifice a girl, his own
daughter no less, and the god that accept the
sacrifice. For some reason, people usually forget this
verse, perhaps a sign of how valued girls are.

Christianity’s influence has spread to Africa, and now all those followers of Christ are murdering homosexuals and “witches”. Almost like it’s some kind of sacrifice to Yahweh. Hey Free Thinker! stop digging into people’s garbage. If you are hungry, I can lend you money.

1. Even stipulating that it actually happened, apparently not.

Matthew 27:46

Psalm 22:1

2: That completely fails to address the fact that the fundamental tenet of Christianity is based on a human sacrifice that was supposedly demanded by the Abrahamic god.
