Among the many things which some Christians try to take credit for is the ideal of human equality that lies behind modern democratic institutions. Democracy functions on the premise that all people are equal and should have an equal voice in how their community is governed. No accident of birth, race, religion, gender, or anything else should elevate anyone to a stronger, more powerful position in political contexts. This is an important principle, but it has nothing to do with Christianity.

There is some reason to believe that equality became popular as a result of the Ana-Baptist movements (Quakers, Amish, etc.) which insisted that each person faced God alone. Out of those movements the Levelers came into being in England. Since all are equal in the sight of God, than all people should have the same possessions.

Yesterday marked the 81st birthday of a great man. Martin Luther King, Jr. wasn’t a great man by who he believed in, but what he believed in. To treat others with the same respect as they have respectfully treated you. He fought against oppression and in part won. But if we are to even know what equality is about we must honor his legacy in treating others with the same respect that they have shown us.

I hope that one day all will understand the message that Martin Luther King, Jr. was trying to get across, and realize that is what makes this country so unique. That message is, even though we are diverse we are non the less united with a mutual respect for all.

Equality is a Christian principle? Tell that to the gays in Uganda, or for that matter gays in the United States? “All men are created equal, but some men are more equal than others? Separate but equal?” let’s not kid ourselves.

“No true Christian…” and other lies Christianity has told us. The fundamentalists are very adept at “lying for Jesus”. In fact, most religions are very practiced in lying for whomever their godhead happens to be. That’s how they hook their unwary victims. They begin with the proverbial carrot and end with the stick.

I heard that there’s a Christian organization that is sending solar powered audio versions of the bible to Haitians now. They want to spread the manure…er…word to the poor, illiterate ones who can’t read the bible’s “good news”. Aren’t they “charitable”? That will really help the starving and injured and displaced Haitians, right?

This is another reason to be atheistic and to eschew religions IMHO. They are blatantly opportunistic and unconscionable in their diseased zealotry. And of course they will rationalize the wonderful benefits the suffering Haitians are receiving from this disgusting attempt to win more “souls for their Lord”.

The fact is 80% of Haitians are supposedly Catholic, anyway. But of course, the Fundies are the “True Christianity” and they must rectify the horror of anyone following the false doctrines of any other belief. I think that Catholicism has already ruined the Haitians as it is. Fundamentalism could hardly be a step up.

I am up to here with these pious, self righteous bible thumpers of any ilk. They have done a great job of impeding the progress of civilization.

THE INSIDIOUS DESTRUCTION OF HUMANITY BY RELIGION IS TANTAMOUNT TO GENOCIDAL MASSACRE.

Sojourner,

Even though it is true I still agree with you and I like your quote.

Unfortunatley the world is one crazy messed up place and until people stop being so arrogant and self centered it will continue to go down the toilet.

I remember when I was a Christian and the preacher was talking about Haiti as being the 2nd poorest country in the western hemosphere and how they deserved to be poor because they had turned their backs on God. I keeped thinking to myself how arrogant this preacher was and how much pride he had for his God. Does this guys god have any compassion for these people? Does he not know that they were brought there as slaves against their will and forced to work cutting down sugar cane? Is oppression the will of this God? That is a god who in my opinion is being completely irresponsible and unjust. In other words their god(s) are nothing more than a manifestation of their own pride.
And people will still buy into this sh*t as long as they have an unprofound fear of these threats and empty promises.

Be objective to that which you are naive to as opposed to being ignorant to that which you are doubtful of and weigh that which is given consideration to, with truth. And admiration of truth is in vain if it does not inspire us to be brave in facing the truths about ourselves.

From the variety of life springs forth the fountain of diversity which only makes us more distinguished and less insignificant. (a quote from a dear humbled friend)

Sojourner is to me a person that has distinguished themself as having integrity because they have weighed that which is given consideration to, with truth.

Eupraxsophy’s frequent use of the word that we all, for that matter, use; or at least ASSUME in much of our thinking and discourse, as atheists or otherwise; that’d be the word…”Truth”.
I’m reminded of something that was emphasized early on in my De Paul University’s undergraduate Philosophy courses (ca. 1960)…
“Define your terms!”
Following that ‘rule’ in any discourse, especially, I’d say, about religion, of course, can, right off the bat, save one from a whole lot of wasted time getting ‘lost in the woods’.
On that note, a quick Google for “Truth” brings up, for one handy reference, good ole Wikipedia’s, I think, rather nicely presented page on the subject. A good reminder, I’d say, to just HOW complicated a word can really be; especially one with such a long “scholarly” (erudite?) history, and so loaded with every possible bias, etc.
Take a look?:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Truth

The other word which Eupraxsophy seems to have a special affinity for is “Pride”. That old:
“Pride goeth before destruction…”
Again, here’s Wiki’s take:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pride

Actually, I’d like to offer a bit of thanks to Eupraxsophy for reminding this atheist of that rather important point…
i.e…being a bit more aware of clearly “defining your terms”. It can save one from a whole lot of totally misdirected, time wasting, “wandering in the intellectual woods.”
Especially, IMO, when wandering…if wandering at all…
with “fundie sheeple”.
“B-a-a-ah!”
