Bible Commentary: Burial of Jesus (Mark 15:42-47)

Follow me on:

Jesus' burial is important because without it, there can be no tomb from which Jesus can arise in three days. It's also historically implausible: crucifixion was intended as a shameful, horrible execution which included allowing the bodies to remain nailed up until they rotted off. It's inconceivable that Pilate would have agreed to turn the body over to anyone for any reason.

(1) Mark Polo says:

There was a discovery not all too long ago of a crucifixion victim (with nails still stuck in through the heels) buried in an individual grave within the Holy Land. While unusual — and unheard of closer to Rome, where the bodies were often left on the crosses until the birds had eaten away all the soft tissue — it seems that Roman governors weren’t above taking a bribe or doing a favor if this suited their own ends.
