Perhaps the most basic reason for not believing in any gods is the absence of good reasons for doing so. Since the burden of support lies first and foremost with those making the positive the claim — the theistic, religious believers who say their god exists — non-believers don't need reasons not to believe. They may help, but they aren't particularly necessary. Instead, what is required are reasons to believe.

Go to reasons.org. You will find pleanty there. I think it is something like 10 to the 240 power, now.
Mark
I’ve been there, and haven’t seen any good reasons to bother believing in any god. If you think you saw any there, feel free to make a case for them.
I went there, couldn’t find any reasons at all. Not 1, and not 10 to the 240th power. There was a link on the home page for “Today’s new reason to believe” but it didn’t do anything. I went to the site map and saw no list of reasons. There was a list of Topics there in the map, so I poked at a few of those. Pretty much all I saw was ridiculous bunk, science twisted to “fit” with ancient mythologies. Some of the topic links went to the same page, such as the link for Evolution and the link for Fossil Record. I used their search engine to find anything on “homosexuality”, an important topic to me, but there were no results. Ultimately, I found no reasons to believe the website.
reasons.org is a FAIL
Must be you’ve not seen PBS’s special on Hitler & the occult, nor have you processed the logical disconnect between Hitler’s actions and those which he professed, apparently for the purposes of your own religious perspective.
reasons to believe:
conception, childbirth, love, where did the big bang come from, the immensity of the universe, beauty, all that is good
reasons not to believe:
selfishness, it requires CHANGE IN BEHAVIOR and an admission that one is not in charge of one’s destiny or universe
I believe in beer.
I can prove that beer exists
I can prove that I have one.
Feel free to show how any of them are “reasons to believe.”
Can you show that atheists are any more selfish than theists, or is that just your own bigotry talking?
Since Hitler’s actions were consistent with the historical treatment of Jews, why do you say that?
What is my “religious perspective,” exactly? Do you even know what you’re talking about?
@ Mark Bradshaw: 10e240? Really?
That’s 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 reasons.
Can you cite even one?
@ Mark Bradshaw:
Note that there are only about 10e21 stars in the universe. You’re claiming that there are 10e219, or 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 reasons for believing in gods for every star in the universe. Get real, moron.
Make that “1e” . . . in my previous comments.
If each reason took 1kB to express, that would be 1e240kB = ~9.8e236MB =~ 9.54e233GB =~9.3e230TB. Are you claiming that site has a storage capacity on the order of 9.3e230TB? Could you possibly make a more ridiculous claim?
10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000
I am going to stay with beer for reasons for debate. I don’t have to deal with so many zeros.
I’m still on about this. If every person on the planet, man, woman, and child, possessed on hundred 1TB hard drives, that would be ~6.8e11TB. Are we starting to grasp the scope of this exaggeration (more likely utter ignorance) yet?
A googol is 1e100. Mark’s claimed number of reasons to believe in gods is a googol^14 – one hundred trillion googol.
Sorry, it’s googol^2.4.
googol^2.4. OK. If this many beers were placed end to end, how long would the line be? That would me to put it in to perspective.
That would HELP me to put it in to perspective.
@ Ron: Just a few more than you and I could drink together.
10^420 bottles of beer on the wall . . .
Reasons not too believe. Having enough integrity not to fall for a protection racket.
