Myth: Atheists are Fools who Say in their Heart 'There is no God'

Wednesday November 4, 2009
Christians seem to love to quote the above verse from Psalms. Sometimes, I think this verse is popular because it allows them to call atheists "fools" and imagine that they can avoid taking responsibility for doing so - after all, they are just quoting the Bible so it's not really them saying it, right? Even worse is the part they don't quote - but not because they don't agree with it. They often do, but I don't think they want to be caught saying it directly because that's harder to defend.

(1) Andrew says:

Two side fences… The word belief in the bible holds more than one meaning. Translation… Enough said.
It (belief) also can mean adhere to. So if you are doing a good work then you are adhereing to jesus’ message.
Perhap you aren’t a full atheist until you stop doing good for people.

So no one did any good for anyone else until Jesus came along? I fail to see how compassion is exclusively a Christian trait, seeing as many Christians are anything but compassionate.

Classic propaganda taught in many dogmatic churches. The argument starts with a smear so it can be framed. Then it claims that a supernatural being can see into the human heart. It is something from nothing.

A fool says in his heart that there is no god(s). A wise man proclaims it out loud! :D

As for the ethical arguments… As someone else said, “Name me an ethical statement made or an action performed by a believer that could not have been made or performed by a non-believer.” And then the zinger follow-up, “Now name me one unethical statement made or action made because of religion… you probably have already thought of one”

Christians are fools who say in their heart “there are not the Greek Gods.”

Not quite, Larian, you forgot to invite Prudence -

The fool has said in his heart there is no God.

Anyone with an ounce of smarts, when not in the
presence of pious cutthroats, proclaims it out loud.
