Church & State Fundamentals: The Constitution Refers to Christianity and Jesus

Tuesday October 27, 2009
One common argument in favor of the separation of church and state is that the Constitution, which is the founding legal document of this nation, makes no reference to religion except in terms which would exclude it from government authority, and certainly makes no reference to Christianity. Therefore, the position which argues that Christianity was essential to the founding of this nation and should continue as a partner with the government is supposed to be refuted.

>”the Year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and Eighty seven.”

I had never heard this “argument” before. This is one of the weakest stretches I’ve ever heard of. And that’s saying something.

We got a letter from an Atheist Experience viewer awhile back including a quote from a Xian he was dialoguing with who said that our laws were based on the Biblical morality. I sent him a link about British Common Law and our Constitutional connection. I wish I still had the letter. The Xian was claiming the Constitution mentioned god, but I wrote to the letter-writer and just indicated I thought the Xian was confusing the Constitution with the Declaration of Independence. I advised him to ask the Xian to call out where the Constitution talks about God (except in regard to legislation protecting freedom of religion).

Since the apologist argument for state/church integration is one that claims our state is based on relgious ideology–to use “year of our Lord” to try to suppor that the Constitution is then based on religion is pretty weak. To say it “refers to Xianity and Jesus”–when they’re greater point is ALWAYS “based on”–is a cop out in my opinion. It’s as though when they looked, there really wasn’t the support they needed, so they luckily found this one reference to an antiquated dating system–and they’re going to use it to try to call a technical. WRONG. “Year of our Lord” comes nowhere NEAR what they need to illustrate their greater point–which has consistently been that our legal system comes from Xianity.

Weak, weak, weak.

It’s called lyin for the Lord .There is no lie they won’t tell. A xtian friend was trying to tell me that a dead willow twig can be put in the mud and it will come back to life. This was my reply: I said, You know, you are an intelligent man and I know that you know better than that! So, Don’t give me that b### S###. I will bring you 100 willow twigs to grow, only I will make sure they are dead first. We were discussing the resurrection, and I had stated that we know that a dead biological organism cannot be restored bact to life.

Our Constitution (except for the Bill of Rights) is a complete disaster. I’m surprised that Jesus isn’t included in the mix.

Here’s a group of fundies that have an opposite viewpoint. They think the constitution is a satanic document and want to rescind anything and everything in it that they have decided is not based in the commandments or the bible, period.

this group of nutcases is really frightening and truly deranged and delusional. They feel they are doing “God’s” work if they somehow manage to gain control.

Here’s an excerpt of one of my own commemts that might be interesting to some here:

These people would stop at nothing if they could get away with it. They are seriously demented and frightening.

It’s very difficult to even read the page, but struggle through it, these people are the enemy within.
That is why we must prevail against those who want to destroy our country for their good and for their god.

These people are not some exotic citizens of a strange country. These are American Christians, whose very rights came from the same constitution they would destroy. I keep hoping this site is actually the rule of Poe’s law, but I don’t think it is. I think it’s all too real and disturbing. I suggest you read and make up your own mind.

@ The Sojournor

Good gravy, that is some scary,,,um,,, “Things you should know”. I was going to put ‘thinking’, but that is obviously the one thing the people who wrote that down were not doing.
