Bible Commentary: Apocalyptic Gospels: New Testament Gospels and Apocalyptic Literature

Although apocalyptic writing constitutes its own independent literary genre, it still plays an important role within the gospels of the New Testament. In each of the four canonical gospels, a central story involves Jesus describing a coming apocalypse in a manner that is consistent with traditional apocalyptic literature.

One of the reasons these gospels seem magical is that they were largely devised and revised by committees over the years. Not only were they written over and over again, but they were also interpreted to suit various different times and places. Out of total confusion comes a sort of projected wisdom. John the Divine is a good example. Even Jesus Christ was a sort of Betty Crocker trademark for Christianity with the name approved by “Constantine” as a compromise.
