Klingenschmitt Prays for God to Kill Church/State Separationists

Follow me on:

Gordon Klingenschmitt is a former military chaplain who has made a name for himself fighting against secularism and on behalf of theocracy. He no longer seems content with just making arguments against secularism, though, because he's asked for his god to kill the defenders of secularism — at least those defenders of secularism whom he finds most personally annoying, I guess. So far only Barry Lynn and Mikey Weinstein have been named specifically but I'd be surprised if the list isn't expanded in the future.
"One-Minute Prayer: Let us pray. Almighty God, today we pray imprecatory prayers from Psalm 109 against the enemies of religious liberty, including Barry Lynn and Mikey Weinstein, who issued press releases this week attacking me personally. God, do not remain silent, for wicked men surround us and tell lies about us. We bless them, but they curse us. Therefore find them guilty, not me. Let their days be few, and replace them with Godly people. Plunder their fields, and seize their assets. Cut off their descendants, and remember their sins, in Jesus' name. Amen."

This sort of prayer is entirely consistent with Old Testament religion. The deity of the Old Testament wasn't a universal god of "love," but a tribal god actively involved in tribal wars against the enemies of the people singled out by this god for special status. It was an age when gods were active in homes, on the streets, and in the battlefields. It was an age when gods held personal grudges, wore their emotions on their sleeves, and regularly played favorites for little or no reason at all — just so long their egos were stroked and they were in charge.

This is the tradition in which Gordon Klingenschmitt stands. This is the sort of theocratic system which he is striving for: a system that exists for little more than stroking the egos of an alleged deity — or at least the self-proclaimed representatives of that deity. No matter how much Christians might profess universal "love," no theocratic system is entirely peaceful because no theocratic system can exist without oppression, violence, and even murder. After all, when the deity fails to act on its own — which is always the case — believers manage to find a rationalization for why they are their god's "instrument" for fulfilling its will.

When I was a Christian in the mid-80’s a friend told me that, according to the bible, I was not able to remarry. My only option was reconciliation, or ask god to kill my ex-wife.

The notion seemed radical to me, and I was a true believer at the time.

So Klingenschmitt believes in “God as attack dog” praying “Dear god, these guys said bad things about me.. kill them wont you please?”

This is just the sort of peace loving, cheek turning, and tolerance one can really expect from religion isn’t it?

This is proof that prayer has the potential to be quite selfish. And when it is used like this, it goes to show how people can pervert religion. Then again, is this a perversion of religion or just normal for religion?

I especially like the part about Plunder their fields, and seize their assets. Cut off their descendants…

Not just “God, these guys aren’t nice to me, please kill them”, but “oh, and screw over their children, too.” What a charmer.

Well as the President of a local chapter of the AU for the Separation of Church and State, I suppose I should plow my fields as quickly as possible and actually, she can have my assets.

So, is it any wonder that I want my kids, who are in a very good public school, separated from people like this?

I have a choice as an American, and if I wanted them raised in this environment I simply would have sent them to Klingenschmits school, in 1678 Massachusetts.

I one prays for the death of another, that person (who so prays) is an evil witch.
