The last meal which Jesus shared with his disciples is called the Lord's Supper by Christians. In 1 Corinthians 11:20, Paul refers to 'the supper of the Lord,' the only place in the Bible where this name is used. The gospels disagree on whether it was a Passover meal or not, but they are in agreement that it is supposed to represent an intimate fellowship between Jesus and his followers - not just his disciples at the time, but with Christians today through the mass celebration. In reference to the Catholic Eucharist: [Yeah, I'm a 66 yr. old, VERY Ex-Catholic Atheist!] If you haven’t already…’See’ from Lloyd M. Graham’s excellent (I think) book: ‘Deceptions and Myths of the Bible’; page 335-336:
["This ignorant Christian custom of eating and drinking commonplace bread and wine in the hope of gaining some Christlike virtue is but a relic of the savage rite of omophagia- -the eating and drinking of another person's or animal's flesh and blood to acquire his or its qualities, strength, courage, and so on. But the civilized, so-called, have gone the savage one better; they eat a god instead of a man, and so the savage's anthropophagy is now theanthropophagy. It is on this and the crucifixion that the Catholics base their Mass, a pious mumbo-jumbo to which nature answers, "Me no understand."]
[Me again, (w. a bit of off kilter Joking?): Kinda reminds me of 'Hannibal Lecter' talking to 'Clarice' in "Silence Of The Lambs" for some reason...? "Yum, Yum!"]
Thanks, Austin, for a great Site!! I’m a regular [daily...Yikes!] visitor; but I haven’t entered any discussions…yet!…What! I enjoy lurking in the shadows? “Heh, heh!”

Hey Chuck…
By pure coincidence…of course…similarly:
“[I'm a 69 yr. old, VERY Ex-Catholic Atheist!]…Actually, I left the RCC somewhere in the mid to late 1960s.
What!…”I outRANK you!”? (ala Kenneth Mars, in the 1968 movie: “The Producers” ) AND…
I’ve also referred to that same passage…
from Lloyd M. Graham’s excellent (I totally agree) book: ‘Deceptions and Myths of the Bible’.
In fact that book, which I stumbled across ca. 1988(?), sorta pushed me over the edge from agnosticism into full blown atheism.
[What!..."Great minds...blah, blah?"]
It’s, I think, one of those rather commonly overlooked books, that has a rather unique take on “mythology”…ala the “Involution/Evolution” notion of a much lesser know…”hidden”?…ancient cosmology.

Anyway…nice to meet you, Chuck.
And yes…this IS a truly great atheist Site.

Sorry, Austin…I’m embarrassed; I discovered too late…didn’t check the date on that 1st comment.
Yeah, no coincidence…”Deja Vous” all over again? Self meets older self?
Or…to use another movie quote…Fagan, in “Oliver” (1968):
“Terrible thing…old age!”
[I also forgot that I later added the "A" to my moniker; to "distinguish" from other Chucks, no less!]
Aside from my lame joking…
the book recommendation, info, and my personal compliment to you, still stand.

My ex-wife, who was raised in Germany wanted my kids to go to Lutheran Church. I had no objections, and even wanted my kids to have some religion in their upbringing. I am not at all worried about the normal brain washing because they hear a lot more from me than they do from church.

My 10 year old just went to “first holy communion classes” one evening a week for a few weeks. A parent had to go and I took him. One family member and one friend objected and I got offended. I asked them what they thought I would do at my 10 year olds church? A-holes. OK, I came close, but I didn’t!

They do the usual bs and I listen and I know a lot more than just about everyone but I shut up. My kid just want to leave like every 10 year old. He asked a couple questions and I told him “it’s a ****ing cracker”.

My ex is a very cool lady. She told me to TELL them I’m an atheist. She said don’t hide it! I didn’t, but it’s nice to know of all the people, she’s the one that didn’t object. I showed up one day to take the kid and my shirt said “If Jesus Comes Back We’ll Kill Him Again”. He freaked. I told him I was kidding. Underneath it I had one on that said “Weapons of Mass Destruction” with a picture of the bible. He wouldn’t go, so I changed into my “I love Black People”. He accepted that one.

To finish, I noticed that on Palm Sunday, this week, Easter Sunday my ex is not having the kids go to Church. The next week is the Communion. I’m going to ask her if they don’t go on those weeks, why are we bothering?

Hopefully she’ll “see the light”.

PS- the catholic church said that sins such as genocide, mass rape and murder can be confessed to the preist, but desecration of the eucharist must be confessed to the pope. they come up with stupid shit daily.

zayla, your t-shirts are very amusing. i would bet that jesus is laughing very hard at them. cause when he comes back it will be as a king, in order to make all things right. he will also judge you then. he will have the last laugh.

by the way, how can you make fun of the way jesus died, wether you believe in him or not? go watch any passion play or movie if you want to get a slight idea of how terrible it was for any man to have suffered this way.

also by the way – eternal punishment in hell is going to hurt quite a bit too. i pray for you to change your heart before it is too late.

“reverend” Jim?…Like all brainwashed Christian Fundies, your main and. in reality, ONLY ploy is the utterly stupid and monstrously…and demonstrably…UNJUST Hell-fire/damnation crap.
Elsewhere, in the recent threads, you personally stated the totally insulting notion that Austin Cline should have been aborted.
To counter that totally insulting, moronic, and, actually…totally UN-becoming sentiment, to any true “loving” follower of the Mythical Jesus…I think many atheists might agree with my following sentiment that perhaps YOU should have been one of the statistically MUCH more common…natural abortions…namely: “MISCARRIAGES” (God’s abortions?).
I personally propose that two possible wonderfully satisfying things would have been accomplished by that:
1) The World would have one less brainwashed, uneducated, and…obvious from your various comments…manifestly illiterate, religious moron.
and…
[assuming, of course, the existence of your ridiculous notion of some so-called "heaven"?]
2) You would have, supposedly, grown up on the “other side”, preparing to kiss ass to the “All in One”: Father/Jesus/Holy Ghost; essentially becoming an Eternally sycophantic slave, waving your hands in the infinitely vast crowd…FOREVER…in never ending, unimaginably boring (at least to atheist thinking!) so-called…
“Praise”.
Of course, we atheists, would have no possible knowledge of that; thus, unfortunately, depriving us of a HUGE source of endless laughter and merriment! [snark!]
On another atheist Site that I frequent, we don’t mince words; we’d just say…in plain (unedited) English…
“reverend Jim?…for the invisible, and totally imaginary Jesus’ sake?…
Go f**k yourself!!!…
over, and over, ad infinitum” [appropriately?]

OK…I have to admit, Austin…having said that…
I feel just a WEE bit (a smidgen’s worth?) better, now!
Oh…and, if I might…my personal thanks to you for actually BEING among us; and for your many longtime and significant contributions from this Site to the overall atheist “awakening”!
