Myth: Atheism is the Denial of God, Atheists Deny God

Friday September 5, 2008
The most common misunderstanding about atheism involves the definition. Many people insist that atheism is really the denial of the existence of God, but there are two errors here. First, it pretends that atheism is exclusively about their god, the god common to Christians, Jews, and Muslims. Second, it focuses on a narrow sub-set of atheism and atheists to the exclusion of all others. Standard dictionaries list 'disbelief in god or Gods' as the first and primary definition of atheism.

(1) John Hanks says:

Middle class religion denies God every day. In fact it tries to hunt God down with all sorts of magical and idolatrous practices. Atheists are way ahead. They instinctively know that they can’t find anything (it finds them) unless they get rid of the trash.

Ahhh another sex-obsessed deist chimes in. Shows that all religion is about is controlling sex, and nothing more.

Dave The Wave,

Just ignore that idiot of a troll Ringo Stalin; he/she is just another attention-seeking, homophobic religious nut, who couldn’t find anything better to do with his/her time than pollute this and (probably) other atheist sites with his/her garbage.

Also, you said ‘deist’. Didn’t you mean ‘theist’? The two are not synonymous. The latter refers to anyone who believes in the existence of (a) god(s). The former are a subset of theists who typically reject religion and who at least base their belief in (a) god(s) on rational reason.

Oooh! It looks like Stalin’s post has been deleted. It would seem that Mr Cline has started a full-blown crackdown on trolling on this site.

(5) Mork says:

I’ve seen several pieces of work from atheists lately and I actually believe they (you) are closer to believing in God than most people think. My God (of the Bible) is the highest order of being in all of existence. If anything exists then it either has existed forever or spontaneously came into being out of nothingness. I believe the God of the Bible is that being that is timeless and is above all of other created existence including the space-time continuum and reality as we perceive it with our 5 senses. The good news is that He has personality and also loves us!!

(6) Joseph says:

Personality? The Judeo/Christian god is the most drab of the bunch. You want personality? Check out the Norse or Greek gods.

(7) Dave Q says:

Hey Mork;
Two words: “Prove It” If you are going to post on Atheist sites you have to prove as if you were in a court room. Real empirical proof is preferred, and please site your sources. APA style is great, but MLA is also respected.
P. S. The Bible is not considered a scientific source.

(8) The Sojourner says:

Mork:

God loves us? Oh,that explains why he would put us in eternal suffering in hell, for any reason that suits him. No loving parent would willingly torture their own children.

Tell me, don’t you ever feel a bit schizophrenic trying to juggle these factors? Could you be so brainwashed as to not see this dichotomy in your own beliefs? Why is being god FEARING considered an asset?

I don’t deny God, I would have to believe in a god to deny it’s existence. Denying the non-existent is not possible. I might just as well deny the man-in-the-moon or the tooth fairy. No dichotomy here.
