Why Not Believe? Reasons Why Atheists Don't Believe in Gods (Updated!)

Wednesday September 3, 2008
A common question which atheists hear a lot is 'why don't you believe in God?' Theists, religious or not, have trouble imagining why anyone would not believe in at least some sort of god, preferably their own. When a belief occupies such a central place in a person's life and even identity, this is understandable. The fact is, there are many reasons why atheists might not believe in any gods. Most atheists can cite multiple reasons and every atheist is different.

Note: This has been updated with links to longer explanations about each reason why atheists don't believe in gods.

A key concept of Christianity - and of Christ’s teaching (not very original anyway) - is the idea “Kingdom of God” which is to come. We hear that there will be “One Shepherd” (i.e. all people will become Christians - see John 10), that the Gospel will be pronounced everywhere before the end of the world… the whole New Testament is waiting for Kingdom of God to come. Of course, this kingdom “will not come visibly; they will not say ‘Lo here!’ or ‘Lo there’, but the Kingdom of God rises within you” (or something like that). In other words: God will be in the world as long as you create it…

However, I’m full of doubt with the concept. Kingdom of God means God’s presence in the world, which means: the goodness rules, good people no longer fall down etc. A world without sinning? A paradise? Is it to come?

AND WHAT ABOUT THE PRIESTS? They will always find some sins… It would be easy to remove evil if it was not inherent to all actions (e.g. as “egoism” or the will to rule). But the evil is unremovable just because it is not even about the construction of man, it is logically mandatory… Every action can be proved evil, you can always be unhappy of yourself…

So, as long as the Church exists, there will certainly be no “Kingdom of God”. Thus, being pious is proved as evil.
