Ideally, democratic politics is the "art of the possible" — the art of getting things done and governing a community in which diverse interests and perspectives exist. No one gets everything because everyone must be willing to negotiate and compromise. Some argue, though, that politics should be about achieving power and imposing control on others. This is an authoritarian position which is consistent with conservative religious ideologies in which no compromises on "God's Will" are accepted.

(1) Paul Buchman says:

>liberalism tends to be more optimistic about human nature whereas Schmitt argued that “all genuine political theories presuppose man to be evil.”

Humans indeed have a dark side, impulses that could be considered evil. But we have developed civilizing behaviors and institutions which act to keep the darker impulses in check. Liberalism, pluralism, and democracy are just three of those civilizing influences, as are such things as education, police, and, yes, sometimes religion.

The founding document of the USA establishes individual rights and checks on government power. Organizations which seek to subvert those civilizing influences should be watched carefully, and even outlawed if they threaten to overturn them.

(2) The Sojourner says:

I am really disturbed by the insistence of inserting religion into politics, that has come about since Bush’s reign(well, HE thinks he’s the king, anyway}.

The results? We now have Annie Oakley Palin running for VP on the GOPers ticket. Not only a lifetime member of the NRA, but a proponent of anti-choice under any circumstance abortions. Rape or incest? Forget it. Fetal abnormality, so severe a viable birth is impossible? Forget it. I don’t know if the endangerment of the mother’s life or health is considered, even. The Fundies are lapping
this up.

Never mind helping the poor, educational needs, veterans care, health care. She’s pro-life, what more do you need? Oh yes, did I mention she’s also a creationist? Has no real experience and five children? One of the five was recently born with Down’s Syndrome? Who’s going to take care of her kids while she’s busy Veeping? Her hubby works for an oil company, by the way, too!

She’s also an ex beauty queen, nothing wrong with that, so was Anne Richards, but someone had suggested that McPain also chose her because he thinks of her as a kind of “trophy wife”.

She probably thinks gays are an abomination too. I haven’t heard her opinion on that subject, as yet. She’s a home schooler mom, I think, as well. Any bets that she’s NOT a Fundie?

In short, her only real qualification (if you can call it that), is she’s a Fundie, right wing nut. And they say Obama’s not ready to lead?

This woman is a heartbeat away from running the country? After all, McSame is 72 years old and a multiple victim of cancer. Stranger things have happened. FDR died of a brain hemorrhage, in office. Nixon was disgraced in office, and resigned. This woman has been the mayor of a tiny one sled town in Alaska and less than two years as a governor in a state that has less population than most of the major cities in the country.

What if…? Think about that, gentle reader. I would suggest, though, not before you go to sleep, however. Pleasant dreams!

An addenda to the above:

I also meant to mention that Ms. Palin also has absolutely no Foreign Policy experience whatsoever! How’d you like her answering that “3:00 AM call”?
