Frozen vs. Fresh: Survival of the Fittest Embryos

Tuesday August 19, 2008
Evolution is primarily about how species adapt to their environments and change in order to better survive. Usually the "environment" is the natural world, but as we humans change the world around us, we also create new conditions for evolution — including the evolution of our own species. We may be doing just that in the context of in vitro fertilization. According to a new study, freezing embryos before implantation is better than using fresh embryos because the resulting infants weigh more and have fewer abnormalities.

According to Dr Anja Pinborg, from the Copenhagen University Hospital Rigshospitalet:

"We think the reason for the differences is probably positive selection of the embryos for frozen embryo replacement.

"Only the very top quality embryos survive the freezing and thawing process.

"And you only get pregnancies in patients with lots of good embryos to freeze."

Freezing embryos won't lead to a race of superhumans, but I wonder if this or any related process might eventually be found to lead to healthier babies than natural fertilization? I also wonder what the Christian Right will think about this because it involves two things they oppose: the idea of evolution and the idea of freezing and discarding embryos. One thing they hate is (sort of) producing something they deny exists. Maybe some will just deny that any embryos are frozen in the first place? It would be no less absurd than denying the reality of evolution.
