It may sound odd to wonder how and why truth matters - under most circumstances the importance of truth should be obvious. Nevertheless, the question of truth does have problems which are difficult to address; among them is the question of what role the notion of 'truth' plays in our philosophy and our understanding of the world around us.

I agree with you completely, we must define our own truths to one another before we engage in a conversation, especially about a touchy one, like religion, or about personal issues, like abortion. This goes for anything.
Bear in mind that there are also different kinds of “true”, and several things that are neither true nor false-
True
False
Meaningless
Unknown
Unknowable
Opinion
Probable (unknown expressed as potential)
Conditionally True (Water boils at 212 degrees, but only at sea level at 1 atmosphere of pressure)
Metaphor
Functionally True (the 50%/50% of a coin flip that ignores the slim chance of the coin landing sideways)
Game Rule (contextual truth- “you cannot touch the ball with your hands”)
