Barack Obama on Religion, Atheism, Secularism: What Does Obama Believe

Democratic Senator and presidential candidate Barack Hussein Obama has made a number of comments about secularism, church/state separation, religion, and the role of religion in the public square. Unfortunately, some of these comments have been contradictory - one time he'll say something which appears to support strict separation and secular government, then he'll turn around and say something which supports weak separation and weakened secularism. What does Barack Obama believe, and why?

As atheists, I think we too often make religion THE one issue of many. Religion, itself, cannot be wished away, as you well know. I think we must concentrate on the whole picture.
If Mc Pain gets in, the SCOTUS is doomed. If Obama wins, there is a good chance that a truly fair and levelheaded, CONSTITUTIONALLY INCLINED judge will get on the bench.
We all know what has happened to civil rights, freedoms and the constitution since the influx of the right wingnuts has taken over the government and the SCOTUS. I don’t believe we want more of the same. We must consider all factors, when we vote in November, not just the believers vs. non-believers.
The Fundie right is ONLY considering their “values” (wink, wink, nudge, nudge), not what is best for our country, but what they perceive their rather erratic and arbitrary god wants. That’s how theocracies happen.
To guard against this possibility, we must make our votes and voices count. A vote not cast in protest, is a vote that helps to enable everything we’re fighting against.
Let’s not cut off our noses to spite our faces, we could be cutting off our legs and arms as well.
