Protecting their Daughter's Precious Sexual Purity: Placing Responsibility for Women's Virginity with Fathers, Husbands

Religious conservatives are pushing to have fathers take charge of their daughters' sexuality and 'sexual purity.' In the past, men effectively owned their kids and controlled daughters' sexuality. They are assuming authority over their daughters' sexuality as if it were a fetish -- as if that sexuality belonged to them, not to their daughters. The fact that the same isn't being expected of sons demonstrates that the program is misogynistic: it's not about reigning in premarital sex generally but about controlling the choices of women. Women's sexuality needs to be controlled because women need to be controlled.

I’ve tried posting this twice, but it didn’t take. I’m guessing it may have been too long, so here’s part 1:

The latest “greatest” incarnation of this is the “Purity Ball,” a big formal-dress father-and-daughter dance (with only “Christian” “pop” “music,” of course!) that includes an exchange of vows in which the father signs a pledge to “cover” his daughter as her “authority and protection in the area of purity…. This covering will be used by God to influence generations to come,” and the daughter signs a pledge “to remain abstinent until the day I give myself as a wedding gift to my husband.”

(The price tag is pretty fancy too - one of the sponsor sites sets it at $75 per person. Pity the poor guy with two or three daughters.)

A promo video, containing clips from a full-length promo DVD, is online at Google Video:

Carenet Purity Ball DVD Preview

One viewer asked wryly: if these fathers are so intent on protecting their daughters’ virgin little minds and bodies, how much do they tell them about what they’re pledging? After all, a few of the daughters in the video look to be no more than 7 or 8 years old - barely out of the “standing-on-daddy’s-feet-to-dance” stage, and still in the “E-E-E-E-EW-W-W-W-W-W-W-W! Boys are so gross!” stage.

…more to come…

Mystery solved. Here’s part 2:

I wonder how many of those involved in the PBs, from organizers to participants, are even vaguely aware of how sexualized the girls are, with their makeup (the video starts with a shot of a pre-teen, perhaps 8 or 9 years old, having her face done) and in surprisingly many cases, strapless gowns that fairly scream, “I’m going to be half-naked if there’s a breeze! Come and get it!”

I’m certain none of them are aware of the incestuous undertones of the whole thing. The author of a book on father-daughter relationships is quoted as saying that one “teenage girl, sitting in the lap of her father” said she didn’t feel a need to have a boyfriend, because “she was receiving the affection that she needed from her father. That’s why it is so neat to see these fathers showing Godly affection to their daughters. Because their daughters yearn for that affection, that affection from a male, and they’re either going to get it from their father, or they’re going to seek it in other relationships.”

And dancing? This Baptist preacher’s kid immediately thinks of the old joke: “Why don’t Baptists have sex standing up? Because it might lead to dancing.”

As for the title of the video…….. “Memories: Key to Captivating Beauty.” Say what?

Note: A few days after this video appeared on YouTube and the “liberal” (i.e. everyone to the left of James Dobson) world got wind of it (and started ripping it to shreds, as expected), it mysteriously disappeared. As of 11/19/06, it was still up at Google.

A couple of other PB promo clips are up at a Christian video producer’s site: One Hat Design. They’re not quite as disgusting as the first one, but they’re still plenty surreal.

The link in this article goes to another article entirely. I found the right article by going to the previous image number. This was done on a whim to see what would happen.

My only comment for now, I think that’s a pretty disgusting idea, bordering on, or maybe encouragement for, incest. Patriarchy rules! What next? A return to chastity belts?
