Harry Potter: Does Harry Potter Promote Wicca or Witchcraft?

Thursday July 19, 2007
The Harry Potter books written by J.K. Rowling have sustained consistent attack from the Christian Right because of how they portray witchcraft. According to Christian critics, the Harry Potter books encourage children to accept a view of witchcraft that is benign, even good, and thus will lead them to adopt some form of paganism or Wicca. Christians naturally object to this and thus protest the presence of Harry Potter in schools, library, and society generally.

In the same way Road Runner cartoons make children jump off cliffs in Southwestern states–since they think such falls won’t kill them anymore.

Seriously–even a young child knows the difference between _really_ falling down and cartoon “falling down”. Likewise, I give kids enough credit to know that making objects move, morph, or appear out of thin air, can’t be accomplished by saying a few words and waving a stick.

It’s fantasy. Kids understand that.

I think this goes back to the idea that very conservative people have that men, women, and children are just incapable of the simplest things–they need a father-figure to tell them what to do with their every move and choice. Luckily we have these same conservatives willing to step up and assume all that burden of responsibility.

Lucky us.

It all comes down to one thing - uncommon sense - or, more correctly nowadays - Bloody-rare sense

Once upon a time it was ‘common sense’ but now take away coffee cups have to have ‘contents may be hot’ warnings. So of course - the purveyers of this kind of inane stupidity assume that no-one, least of all children, could be more level headed and sensible than themselves. And since they feel an overwhelming desire to run around waving sticks at things and seeing them change shape or vanish - surely kids must right?

I have an astonishingly low tolerance for this kind of pathetic garbage. - and it’s been more than used up!
